The Treasure Coast has become an increasingly popular seasonal destination for many reasons. Many homes and condos around here are only used seasonally - most have been equipped with humidistats. This is the secondary box usually located next to the thermostat. Most homeowners leave specific setting instructions posted next to these controls to be sure they are set properly to ensure the home maintains safe temperature and humidity levels.
While you're away for an extended period, it's standard to set the thermostat at 80 degrees. However, the thermostat does not read humidity levels. Mold and mildew generally do not grow below 65-70% humidity, so setting a humidistat to 60% will override the thermostat and activate the A/C to remove excess moisture from the air. Setting the humidistat to "on" while the home is occupied will not override the thermostat and keep the A/C running as it is set to.
For further A/C related questions, feel free to contact a licensed/insured professional - we have those resources as well! If you have a seasonal home in the area, we would be happy to check on your home while you're away.
